Let’s Go Crazy! - Pattern Crazy!
I would love to say that all my art has a deep and meaningful engagement with the world around me.
However every now and again as if to prevent my self disappearing up my own inner sanctum, I produce work that simply explores pattern and colour and enjoys being art for arts sake.
And so I bring you Pattern Crazy!
This collection is from my archives but I recall exactly how it came about and how it is also one of the kicking myself moments of my life, as the original sketchbook for this work was left on a bus—somewhere near Clapham common I think… and sadly never returned.
The project developed from simple scribbles and doodles which I then enlarged to extreme proportions on a photocopier so that pencil lines suddenly had a very distinct width (imagine a small 3 cm scribble being blown up to A4 size. Tracings, marker-pen outlines and solid colour inter-cuts (one of my favourite pattern-making techniques) were again photocopied, a series of motifs emerged and these were then developed into mono-screen prints. Backgrounds were created as one offs with paper stencils or cut-outs of the motifs and then over laid with another print or torn paper stripe.
With only a small selection of the originals still in existence I then turned them into open edition, very affordable, digital C-type prints meaning that everyone can enjoy going a little bit Pattern Crazy!
